Description :
An exceptional antique French provincial armoire crafted from solid oak, showcasing richly hand-carved panels and an elegant arched bonnet top. The double doors feature geometric and foliate motifs, including quatrefoil medallions and circular rosettes, surrounded by intricately chiseled borders of leaves and vines. The deep relief carving and heavy patina attest to its 18th–early 19th century origins, possibly earlier. The cabinet retains original hand-forged iron hardware, including long pin hinges and a large mortise lock plate. The interior has two fitted shelves and ample depth, suitable for linen, dishware, or wardrobe use. The back panels and floorboards were sympathetically restored in 2002 by master craftsman Tom Kenninger of The Wood Shop, Menlo Park, CA, using antique European flooring, a restoration valued over $4,000. This armoire was originally part of a farmhouse purchase in North Central France in 1920 by Lt. James H. Dulin, a decorated U.S. Army officer of the 333rd Heavy Field Artillery Battalion (Black Hawk Division, WWI). After his discharge, Lt. Dulin settled in France and acquired the piece from a French farm near Paris. The armoire was later disassembled and shipped to the U.S., where the Dulin family continued its care through multiple generations. The documentation accompanying the piece notes that Lt. Dulin was also an artist who may have contributed to the restoration or carving details himself in the 1930s. The family retained continuous ownership for over 100 years, underscoring its strong provenance and preservation history. Note: Items inside the cabinet aren't included. French provincial armoires such as this were the centerpiece of rural homes, serving as both storage and a symbol of craftsmanship. The deeply relief-carved panels and arched cornice suggest regional influences from Normandy or Burgundy, where oak was the dominant material and designs reflected both Baroque and rustic Rococo traditions. A fine example of authentic 18th–19th century French cabinetry, combining artistry, provenance, and preservation. Its historical link to the post–WWI expatriate community adds unique narrative appeal. Comparable French oak armoires of this quality and documented provenance typically command $20,000–$30,000 in fine art and antiques auctions. Estimate: $20,000 – $25,000Provenance
