Description: This is an African lamellophone, also commonly known as a thumb piano, kalimba, or mbira. Traditionally crafted from a wooden soundboard with attached metal keys (lamellae), the instrument is played by plucking the tines with thumbs or forefingers. This example features carved tribal or Chokwe iconography on the soundboard, adding cultural depth and visual interest. Tuning and construction vary widely across regions and makers, with names such as sanza, likembe, and okeme used throughout Africa.
