Description :

This set of three vintage coin banks offers a unique blend of mid-century promotional design and historical significance. Each bank is made of cast metal, giving them a sturdy, timeless quality ideal for display or collection. These pieces reflect the legacy of two American financial institutions with deep community roots.

Included in this set:

  • Capital Savings Bank #1492: Rectangular cast metal bank with embossed detailing. Marked “1492” on the underside. Measures approx. 6.6" L × 3.5" W × 5" H. Note: The coin slot piece has detached but is included with the lot.

  • Capital Savings Bank #1495: Nearly identical to #1492 with slight design variations. Marked “1495” on the underside. Measures approx. 6.6" L × 3.5" W × 5" H.

  • Conneaut Savings and Loan Car Bank: Cast metal bank shaped like a classic car, marked for Conneaut S&L. Measures approx. 7" L × 3" W × 3.5" H.

Condition: All banks show light wear consistent with age. The #1492 bank has a detached coin slot (included); the other two are intact and functional. Stoppers are present and secure. No cracks or structural damage.

Historical Significance:

  • Capital Savings Bank was founded in 1888 in Washington, D.C. and was the first African American–owned and operated bank in the United States. It played a vital role in financing Black-owned businesses and property ownership during the post-Reconstruction era. Though it closed in 1902, its legacy inspired the founding of many other Black-owned banks across the country.

  • Conneaut Savings and Loan was also established in 1888 in Conneaut, Ohio. Originally named Conneaut Savings and Loan Company, it served the financial needs of its local community for decades. The car-shaped promotional bank reflects the mid-20th-century trend of banks offering branded keepsakes to encourage savings and customer loyalty.

PAYMENT DETAILS

Placing a bid is an agreement to purchase. If you win, you must pick up your item(s). If you default on your purchase, your bidding privileges will be revoked permanently. Do not bid if you do not plan to purchase.If you bid, you MUST be available/arrange for pick-up of purchases on the pick-up date unless you have made prior shipping arrangements. Bring necessary tools and help for picking up large items. Loading assistance is NOT available. Some items may be located on a 2nd floor, out building.

Invoices are emailed to winning bidders once the sale has completely closed.Full payment must be made by 8:00 p.m. the day after auction closes. If total payment is not received before the pick-up date & time, items will be forfeited, and bidding privileges revoked.

Pick-up information will be on the invoice e-mailed after the auction closes.All items not picked up during the designated times will be considered abandoned and may be donated or resold. When possible, and at our sole discretion, an alternate pick-up time may be arranged. If this is possible, an appropriate fee will be charged. 

A 10% Buyer's Premium and Sales Tax are added to the winning bid amount when invoiced. Sales tax is waived for licensed re-sellers.

We make every effort to describe lot items as accurately as possible. Expect normal signs of wear associated with antiques, vintage, and used items. We do not list every flaw.
