Description :
Globe-Wernicke was known for inventing the first "modular" furniture. This quarter-sawn oak set of shelves comes apart into 4 sections plus a top piece, so you can use 1,2,3, or all 4 of the cases depending upon the desired height you want. (there is no base piece, but clients used is as is and it looked just fine flush on the floor). The sections piggy-back onto one another and a sturdy top plank holds each jig-sawed into the next. Hardware uses a scissoring action to lift and slide back the front glass panel. This set has oxidized brass exterior hardware throughout and is solidly built. 3 of the sections are labeled C-11 299 with the 4th labeled C-11 in addition to 111-299. We think that last one must be slightly newer as they all appear to be the same design. (first 3 numbers are the size with the last the material/finish tone according to one source). Each section measures about 13.5" H x 34" W x 9.5" D. Total height with all 5 pieces is approx. 58" with a depth of 10.5" D. Note on condition: while in good condition mechanically, the piece needs a through scrub-down. Note that there are several cosmetic flaws: - tan paint on exterior of 2 side panels - may be able to remove/scrape. - brass needs to be polished on exterior hardware & knobs - one bookshelf has the metal " slide track" missing - still fully functions just fine; we didn't notice until doing close-up photos. - there are various scrapes/slight dings - most egregious are shown in final 2 photos. This would be a terrific addition to any traditional library setting as a bookcase or as a showcase (our client used it to show off her porcelains). Barrister Bookcases this is not an exact duplicate but will give you an idea of how these hold their value when well-taken care of.
