Description :

Turquoise

Turquoise is the blue stone dominating your display — including that big upright slab in the back.

How to recognize it

  • Blue to blue‑green color

  • Brown or black veining (“matrix”)

  • Waxy or matte surface when polished

  • Often found in nodules or seams

What it is A copper‑aluminum phosphate mineral that forms in dry, copper‑rich regions. Your pieces show both:

  • polished turquoise (smooth, bright blue)

  • rough turquoise (more greenish, with matrix showing)

Malachite

The deep green stones with banding and swirls are malachite.

How to recognize it

  • Bright to dark green

  • Concentric rings or stripes

  • Smooth, glassy polish

  • Heavy for its size

What it is A copper carbonate mineral that forms in the oxidation zones of copper deposits. Your pieces show classic botryoidal malachite — rounded, layered growth.

Chrysocolla

Some of the blue‑green pieces that aren’t quite turquoise are likely chrysocolla.

How to recognize it

  • Softer, more powdery blue‑green

  • Often mixed with quartz, malachite, or copper minerals

  • Can look like watercolor patterns

What it is A hydrated copper silicate that often forms alongside turquoise and malachite. It’s softer, so it’s often stabilized or found in mixed matrix pieces.
