Description :
Herb Kawainui Kāne depicts the arrival of Father Damien at the Kalaupapa leper colony on the Hawaiian island of Molokai in 1873 Father Damien, born Joseph De Veuster in Belgium, volunteered to serve the isolated community after a call from his bishop. He dedicated his life to the physical and spiritual care of the residents, who had been forcibly exiled due to leprosy. He built homes, churches, and coffins for the deceased, treating the people with dignity and respect. Father Damien contracted the disease himself and died in 1889. He was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2009 and is known as the "Apostle to the Lepers" Description
