Description :
Christmas Eve is a serene winter landscape by aviation and wilderness painter Ross Buckland, rendered in acrylic with his signature blend of atmosphere and narrative detail. The scene opens on a quiet snowy shoreline at dusk, where a small church glows warmly against the cool blues and violets of the fading sky. Bare trees, a wooden fence, and a gently winding stream frame the foreground, guiding the viewer toward the water beyond. In the distance, several sailboats rest at anchor on a still inlet, their reflections catching the last light of evening. Above the church, a single bright star shines—an understated but symbolic focal point that gives the painting its contemplative, seasonal mood. Buckland’s soft transitions of color and careful handling of light create a peaceful, almost storybook atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and timeless. Ross Buckland is a Canadian painter celebrated for his detailed, atmospheric depictions of aviation, wilderness, and northern landscapes. Born in Calgary in 1958 and based for many years in Toronto, Buckland is largely self‑taught, developing his craft through close study of master aviation artists such as Frank Wootton, Keith Ferris, and R.G. Smith. His preferred medium is oil or acrylic on board, which allows him to achieve the crisp detail and luminous skies that define his work. Buckland’s paintings often explore themes of solitude, adventure, and the quiet drama of remote environments—whether depicting historic aircraft in flight or tranquil winter villages like Christmas Eve. His work has been exhibited in galleries including Trailside Galleries and Tabora Gallery, and he has received recognition from the American Society of Aviation Artists, including the Founders’ Gold Award for his RCAF CF‑101 painting.Artist Bio — Ross Buckland (Canadian, b. 1958)
