Description :

Handcrafted Peruvian folk‑art mirror attributed to Hermanos Mabilon & Eleudora Jimenez, noted Ayacucho retablo artists recognized for their miniature narrative dioramas. The frame is constructed as a series of small, compartmentalized scenes, each modeled and painted by hand. Figures depict market vendors, musicians, agricultural work, and daily Andean village life, rendered in the Jimenez family’s signature style: expressive faces, saturated pigments, and tightly composed storytelling vignettes.

The mirror glass is clear. The painted surfaces show light, intentional rustic wear consistent with the workshop’s traditional aesthetic. A strong, collectible example of contemporary Andean narrative craftsmanship.

Artist Biography: Hermanos Mabilon & Eleudora Jimenez

The Jimenez family of Ayacucho, Peruis one of the most respected lineages in modern retablo and diorama folk art. Their work continues the post‑earthquake Ayacucho tradition of small‑scale narrative scenes crafted from hand‑modeled pasta (a plaster‑clay mixture) and brightly painted wooden frames.

Mabilon Jimenez Quispéis known for his “small worlds,” miniature scenes that capture rural Andean life with humor and precision. His work has been featured in international folk‑art galleries and has been profiled in craft publications for its detail and cultural storytelling.

Eleudora Jimenez, often working collaboratively with Mabilon, is recognized for her fine detail work, especially in market scenes, musicians, and agricultural motifs. Together, the siblings produce retablos, mirrors, and diorama boxes that are widely collected in North America and Europe.

Their pieces are valued for their authenticity, cultural specificity, and the continuation of a multi‑generational Ayacucho tradition.

Values for Jimenez‑family works vary by size, age, and complexity. Publicly documented sales include:

  • Larger mirrors with full narrative borders Retail‑oriented listings have reached $1,200–$2,400, depending on condition and detail.

  • Auction‑house examples of Jimenez mirrors Generally fall in the mid‑hundreds, with more elaborate pieces approaching $900+.

$350–$900 collector‑market range, with higher retail potential in curated folk‑art environments.
