Description :
Spirit of St. Louis - Single-Engine Monoplane
The Spirit of St. Louis is the aircraft Charles Lindbergh flew on the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in May of 1927. Though customized for the journey, the plane was originally based on a Ryan NYP, derived from the Ryan M2. However, in Lindbergh’s version the plane had no front windscreen, but rather a periscope he used to see straight ahead. The only direct vision in the aircraft was via the side windows. With most of the “extra” space taken up by fuel tanks, the Spirit of St. Louis could hold 450 gallons of gas and could fly approx. 120 mph with a range of about 4,100 miles. The famous flight took place from Long Island, NY to Le Bourget near Paris on May 20-21, 1927 and was backed by a group of businessmen from St. Louis, hence the plane’s now iconic name.
