Description :
.Two fabulous vintage
(1960s) tin litho space capsules from SH-Horikawa of Japan: Apollo in blue and Friendship 7 in yellow.
Both are great display items with minor/mechanical flaws. Apollo capsule has great graphics similar to the other Horikawa capsule
offered up for auction*. Great color and detail with orange plastic nosecone.
Unfortunately, this toy doesn’t turn on with batteries inserted; it appears a
metal conductor plate may be missing in the battery compartment. If it DID
operate, winged hatches would pop open exposing an orange-clad astronaut in a
red chair flying the capsule. Toy is also missing a back wheel - see last photo. Measures approx. 4.5” H x 9" L. Friendship capsule also has great bright coloring and detail – an astronaut clad
in an aqua lace-up space suit spins below two clear windows when the toy moves.
This is a friction toy, but the mechanism does not appear to be working
properly as it won’t “rev up”. When pushed manually you can see the internal
astronaut spin, however. May have had two antenna at some point – check out the top red
panel in photos; note there is a small puncture in the window panel near the "sill" - see second to last photo.. Measures approx.. 4” H x 9” L. Both of these pieces are terrific examples showing the best of Japanese
litho tin toy design of the period. Even if you don’t have the ambition to repair
them, they would be fabulous display pieces with a bit of a scrub and some
polish. * See Lot# 36
