Description :

The Koruru Pair of Traditional Maori Carved Heads are intricately carved wooden sculptures, typically crafted from native New Zealand timber such as totara or kauri. These heads are often painted in vibrant colors, with red and black being predominant. Each koruru represents the face of an ancestor and is traditionally placed at the apex of the gable on a Maori meeting house, known as a whare whakairo. The carvings feature detailed patterns and motifs that are symbolic of Maori culture and heritage, including spirals and other geometric designs that convey stories and genealogies.

Hand carved in Rotorua, New Zealand. (100% Maori made.)

These koruru heads are not merely decorative; they hold significant cultural and spiritual importance. They embody the presence of ancestors and are integral to the identity and history of the Maori people. The koruru serves as a guardian of the meeting house, symbolizing protection and the continuity of lineage.
