Celadon Bamboo Style Garden Stool Light Green Glaze

These sleek hexagonal garden seat are covered in a light green glaze with a jade-like luster. The soft celadon color evokes the liveliness of bamboo, a popular plant viewed as a metaphor of perseverance. On each of the six sides of the seat is a streamlined design of raised bamboo stalks. The top of each seat is decorated with a single pierced coin design, a beloved traditional motif symbolizing wealth and abundance. It is frequently seen on garden seats since the Ming dynasty.

The 20th century artist has simplified this ancient form to make pieces that would also be at home in a contemporary setting.  While originally made as outdoor seats, today, this pair of garden seats would be used inside a living room.

History

The beginnings of the Chinese celadon tradition can be traced to the Yue kilns in Zhejiang Province in south China in the fourth century. The use of iron oxide to create green glazes then spread to northern China in the sixth century. The tradition of using these green glazes disappeared in China in the fourteenth century with the rise in popularity of blue and white wares. It was revived in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and has continued into the modern era.
