Description :
Personal memorabilia from former VP/General Manager of North
American Aviation/Hughes aircraft - L.A. "Pat" Hyland. While he was best known for leading the
company to dominance in the aerospace field, his initial fame was contributing
to the development of radar.
Really interesting group of photos, awards programs, personal
correspondence, and invitations for various space launches. This man & his
wife moved in elite circles – there’s even a note from a flower shop for a
bouquet sent from Howard Hughes to Mrs. Hyland. Interesting reading….
White House invitation to dinner for Apollo 11 astronauts
held in LA in 1969. Includes table assignment & invitation/envelope.
2 invites to the Apollo 16 launch at the Kennedy Space
Center for the Hylands on December 6, 1972. One invite from Charles Kraft, the
other from James Fletcher.
2 envelopes postmarked 1959 from the Naval Stations in
Antarctica to Mr. & Mrs. Hyland. Golden Omega Awards programs from December 1968 where Hyland
was given the award – also a newspaper clipping on the event at the Biltmore in
LA.
Program from the 1967 Collier Award which Hyland won
(previous award winners include Orville Wright in 1913 and James E. Webb in
1965). Program is signed by Hubert Humphrey and Hyland. Newspaper
clipping also included as is a letter regarding the ceremony several years
later when Hyland is asked to attend the award ceremony when it goes to the
Apollo 15 crew.
An unsigned letter from Michael Collins.
2 black & white photos of Hyland with various associates from the
early 1960s.
2 photos of Hyland, his wife, and associates with geisha
hosts in Kyoto, Japan. The photos themselves are in great shape but need to be
reglued into their lovely paper frames.
A gift card from Marie Colman Flowers of Hollywood to Mrs.
Hyland from a bouquet sent to her by Howard Hughes & thank-you card from
Ethel & Kim Jacob (1972).
