Description :
4 Vintage Books - while the exteriors are only in fair condition, all have extraordinary images inside - particularly the first 3.
First, 2 classic early 20th C books featuring Palmer Cox’s “Brownies” – the odd-looking creatures that were some of the first internationally merchandised caricatures (the Kodak Brownie camera took its name from the character). The two books:
THE BROWNIE PRIMER by Palmer Cox. Hardcover. 1923. Century Company (New York, NY) 108 pages. Wonderfully engaging book with terrific pictures for elementary students learning to read. Great vocabulary for the early learner and better stories than Dick & Jane, too! In very good vintage condition with expected use/wear for its age.
BROWNIE CLOWN OF BROWNIE TOWN by Palmer Cox. Hardcover. 1908. Century Company (New York, NY) 108 pages. Fabulous illustrations and with lots of color – especially given the time it was published. In decent condition with some water stains and a couple of repaired & ripped pages. Truly delightful graphics and rhyming prose. If you’re curious about these guys:
Second, a pair of vintage illustrated books:
TALES FROM STORYLAND by Watty Piper. Hardcover. 1941, Platt & Munk Company (New York, NY) no pagination. Wonderfully colorful illustrated young people’s stories. The cover is in quite used shape, but the inside illustrations lovely! If the book were ours, we’d remove the pages from the bindings and frame the illustrations for a gallery wall for our kid!
CURRIER & IVES – PRINTMAKERS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE by Harry L. Peters. Hardcover. 1942, Doubleday, Doran & Co (Garden City NY) text + 192 plates. Great compilation of the printer's well-known and not so famous images. Cover is very worn at top of binding, but interior plates are still in great shape with a bit of reddening..
