The framed item is a pyritized ammonite fossil, specifically of the genus Pleuroceras, dating back to the Jurassic period, approximately 185 million years ago. Key information: Ammonites were marine mollusks, related to modern squid and octopuses, with a distinctive coiled shell. Pyritization is a fossilization process where the original shell is replaced by pyrite (iron sulfide), giving it a metallic, golden appearance. This particular fossil was found near Forcheim, Germany. Ammonites used their shells for protection and buoyancy control. They went extinct around the same time as the dinosaurs
