Description :
A Butsudan (仏壇) is a Buddhist altar typically found in Japanese homes and temples. It serves as a sacred space for worship and honoring deceased family members. A Butsudan usually consists of a wooden cabinet with doors, which enclose a space containing religious items such as a Gohonzon (sacred scroll or statue of Buddha), incense burners, candlesticks, flowers, and other ritual objects. Families use the Butsudan to offer prayers, light incense, and make food offerings to ancestors, following the traditions of Buddhist sects such as Jōdo Shinshū, Zen, Nichiren, and Shingon. The design and rituals associated with the Butsudan vary depending on the Buddhist school and family traditions.
