Large-size red antique Chinese butterfly cabinet. When purchased at a Seattle antique store many years ago, the client was told it was a couple hundred years old. We are unable to verify that, but the wood that isn't lacquered is definitely very old and the cabinet appears to have been assembled almost completely with wood joinery except for the metal butterfly motif on the front. Measures just over 69" H and wears its age proudly - lots of cracks and gaps, but still very sturdy and we believe the lack of perfection gives it great character. The client used to display sculptures between the legs and on top of the cabinet.

Sides gently slope outward as they go down - both on the width measurement and the depth measurement. From the front, the cabinet measures approx. 42" wide at the top below the cornice piece and flares out to 52" where the legs meet the floor. (Cornice piece measures approx. 48" side to side.) From the side, the cabinet measures approx. 18.5" at the top below the cornice piece and flares out to 23" where the legs meet the floor. This tapered effect makes the cabinet seem to float.

There are 2 central swing-out doors that conceal 2 shelves in the black interior along with 2 drawers under the top shelf. There are 2 additional drawers below the apron; all drawers have metal pulls. Swing-out doors have latch pin at the butterfly's  head. The butterfly is incised and also has inset decorations that are lovely.

Great piece that really shows off its age with class.
