Pair of Vintage Japanese Satsuma-Style Earthenware Vases

Pair of Japanese Satsuma-style earthenware vases, each featuring:

  • Bulbous body, tall slender neck, and flared rim

  • Traditional crackle glaze in ivory tones

  • Decorative motifs in green with gilt highlights

  • Peacocks surrounded by floral designs

  • Scrollwork borders at the neck and shoulders

Underside bears a green cartouche mark reading 薩摩手 (Satsuma-te, “Satsuma style”) and an original “Made in Japan” export label, dating the pair to the mid-20th century (Showa era).

About the Maker / Origin:

Satsuma ware traces its origins to the late 16th century, when Korean potters introduced ceramic techniques to the Satsuma domain in southern Japan. By the Edo and Meiji periods, Satsuma ceramics gained acclaim for their ivory crackle glaze and elaborate gold-accented decoration.

In the early-to-mid 20th century, Japanese workshops produced export wares in the “Satsuma style” (薩摩手 / Satsuma-te), echoing traditional finishes and motifs for Western markets. This pair exemplifies that legacy, combining classic crackle glaze with gilt floral and avian designs typical of Showa-era export ceramics.
