In Chinese culture, the water buffalo symbolizes strength, perseverance, and the agrarian way of life. Artistic depictions of children riding buffaloes are common in folk art, representing simplicity, innocence, and a deep connection to nature. In Daoist and Buddhist traditions, this motif resonates with the “Oxherding” parables—allegories of spiritual awakening and the journey toward inner peace.
