Description :
Striking antique engraving depicting Luís Vaz de Camões (1524–1580), the Portuguese national poet and author of Os Lusíadas, portrayed in classical laurel and armor. Below, a detailed vignette shows the poet clutching his manuscript amid crashing waves — a reference to the legend that he swam to shore during a shipwreck, saving his literary masterpiece. Printed in fine black ink on cream wove paper and framed under glass. Signed in plate lower right: “Lith. de Lemerc.” Historical Note: Condition: light age toning and minor creasing consistent with age; vintage frame included. Approx. 19” × 15” framedAntique 19th-Century Engraving of Luís de Camões — “Os Lusíadas” Maritime Scene
Luís de Camões is revered as one of Europe’s greatest poets, often called the “Portuguese Shakespeare.” His epic Os Lusíadas (1572) immortalized the Age of Discovery and Portugal’s maritime empire. Portrait engravings of Camões were especially popular during the 19th century, coinciding with Portugal’s Romantic nationalist revival and the rise of illustrated book plates and lithographs.
