Description :

Offered here is an original 1999 mixed media abstract by Latvian artist Valdis Zariņš, signed and dated by the artist. The composition centers on a geometric arrangement of layered triangular forms, set against a textured ground with incised linear patterning. Zariņš’ work from this period is known for its disciplined structure, controlled tonal palette, and subtle surface variation—qualities clearly present in this example.

The piece blends matte and textured elements, creating shifts in depth as light moves across the surface. Its restrained geometry and Baltic modernist sensibility make it a strong fit for collectors of contemporary abstraction, geometric minimalism, and late‑20th‑century Eastern European studio work.

Artist Bio: Valdis Zariņš Valdis Zariņš (Latvia, 20th/21st c.) is a contemporary Latvian artist recognized for his exploration of geometry, texture, and optical depth. Working primarily in mixed media, he builds his compositions through layered surfaces, incised lines, and carefully modulated tonal fields. His work reflects the broader Baltic modernist tradition—quiet, precise, and materially focused—while maintaining a distinctly personal language of abstraction. Zariņš’ pieces have been exhibited in regional galleries and private collections throughout Latvia and the greater Baltic region, where his craftsmanship and contemplative visual presence are highly regarded.

He was born in Latvia and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Washington in 1965. He later went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in 1966. He continued to live in Renton where he continued to create sculptures, kinetic art, and fountains. Valdis had been exhibiting works since 1964 including many public works, such as the fountain at Boeing Field and Washington State Arts Commission in Olympia.

Condition Light, expected surface variations consistent with the artist’s hand‑worked technique.
