Description :
At first glance, this large grouping doesn't look very enticing, but take a closer look and you will be surprised. This is a perfect example of how DIY refinishing/tweaking can be a great return on your investment if the underlying pieces are good quality. Smaller scale than modern dining sets; this group is perfect for a small apartment or for use in an art room (how our client used this set). The dining table, 4 chairs, and spinet desk are all from MCM furniture-maker Haywood-Wakefield of Chicago. All are solid wood and feature spindle legs, solid joinery, and great lines - we believe these are from the 1940s and they have withstood time well despite the green translucent stain now being a bit worse for wear in places. With some wood refinishing (if you don't like the naturally distressed look), upholstery fabric, and a stapler, you could have this set looking new and it could last for another 80 years. Spinet desk with incised decoration has backsplash, splayed legs, and single drawer (note that the drawer sticks a bit right now - soap will probably fix). Measures. 32 " to table surface plus an additional 3.5" H with backsplash x 36" W x 17.5" D. Set of 4 chairs with atrocious upholstery have single flat back column supports with incised decoration, unusual back shape, slight curvature in chair pitch, and flare-front seats. Measure 34" H x 16" W x 15.5" D. 3 of the 4 are currently in the same fabric. The seats are in need of reupholstering; see last 2 photos.** Dining table is expandable - 2 leaves measuring 8.5" each reside in a hidden pocket at one end of the table. The leaves can be used alone or together. Mechanism for insertion works with a terrific gear wheel - see photos. Measures 30" H x 42.5" L x 36" D. Expanded the length increases to 60". *H-W made great solid wood furniture and was a mainstay for almost 150 years before ceasing production in 1980s. It was revived about a decade later and now makes MCM style furniture for the modern home ** Remove the current upholstery to use as a pattern, lay new foam if desired, cut new fabric, tuck edges, staple, and you are done.
