Description :
“My First Pony” is an original watercolor by Jody Bergsma, rendered in her signature soft, storybook style. The piece features a small golden pony standing in a patch of grass and wildflowers, its gentle expression turned toward a fluttering yellow butterfly. Bergsma’s delicate washes of green and warm earth tones create a tender, nostalgic atmosphere, while her precise linework gives the pony a charming, almost animated presence. The work is presented in a wood frame with a brass-toned inner liner and a titled nameplate. Jody Bergsma (American, b. 1952) is a Pacific Northwest watercolorist known for her blend of whimsical illustration, geometric structure, and emotionally expressive imagery. Born in Bellingham, Washington, she began painting as a child and gained early recognition when she won her first art competition at age 15. Though she briefly studied engineering at the University of Washington, Bergsma is largely self‑taught as a painter; her engineering background later influenced the precise geometric motifs and balanced compositions found throughout her work. Bergsma’s career spans thousands of original paintings, children’s book illustrations, and licensed artworks. Her pieces have been exhibited widely and are represented through the Bergsma Gallery in Bellingham, WA, which she founded in 1984. Her work has also appeared in national exhibitions, gift galleries, and specialty art markets across the U.S., including collaborations with SeaWorld and numerous publishing houses.Artist Bio — Jody Bergsma
