Description :

A collection of three glass-jar butter churns with wooden paddles, metal crank mechanisms and wooden handles. Two feature exposed gears, while the third has an enclosed red-painted gear housing—an appealing display of practical kitchen engineering.

Details

  • Three hand-operated butter churns with clear glass jars and interior wooden paddles.
  • Two square-bodied jars with exposed metal gearing.
  • One rounded glass jar with molded detailing and a red-painted enclosed mechanism.
  • Visible markings include Dazey Churn & Mfg. Co., Made in America, and numbered cast components.
  • Threaded metal lids support the crank and paddle assemblies.
  • Exact production dates and originality of individual components have not been verified.

Measurements

  • Small square churn: approximately 4.5" × 11⅞".
  • Larger square churn: approximately 9.75" × 6".
  • Red-top churn: approximately 5.25" × 12.75".
  • Measurements exclude the projecting width of the crank handles.

Condition

Previously owned with substantial surface wear, oxidation and rust on the metal components. The red housing has chipped and worn paint. Wooden handles and paddles show discoloration, wear and rough areas; the small churn’s paddle has visible splitting and splintering. Glass shows scattered marks and residue. Crank operation and butter-making performance have not been tested. Please review the detailed photographs.

Highlights

  • Glass-jar paddle churns brought butter-making to the household countertop. Turning the handle drove gears connected to a wooden paddle, agitating cream until butter separated from the buttermilk. The clear jar allowed the maker to watch the process.
  • Dazey began producing small glass-jar churns in 1904 and offered multiple sizes and designs. Their compact construction made them a practical alternative to larger churns for household batches. This trio illustrates two mechanical approaches: exposed gearing and an enclosed gear housing.
