Description :
This rare early 20th-century Mexican Tlaquepaque pottery tortilla warmer (circa 1930s) features a deep cobalt-black glaze with vividly hand-painted folk scenes depicting pastoral and village life — including reclining figures beneath trees, playful animals, and stylized flora. The lid is crowned with a conical finial and encircled by a floral border, while geometric squared handles add a striking Art Deco influence typical of Tlaquepaque ceramics from the inter-war period. The underside bears a stamped hallmark with Mexican characters, consistent with marks used by Jalisco-region workshops producing export and tourist ceramics during the 1930s–40s. The interior is finished in classic burnt-terra cotta glaze, characteristic of early Tonalá and Tlaquepaque earthenware. Details: Origin: Tlaquepaque, Jalisco, Mexico Date: Circa 1935 Material: Hand-painted earthenware with glazed finish Mark: Stamped hallmark underside (illegible character mark, typical of early Tlaquepaque) Design: Folk village and animal motifs on black ground, conical lid finial, square handles Why It’s Special: A fine example of pre-war Mexican folk art pottery, showcasing both indigenous and colonial design influences. Pieces of this size and detail were often sold in Guadalajara’s artisan markets and later collected for their bold color palette and storytelling motifs. Its excellent preservation of the hand-painted surface makes it highly collectible among early Mexican ceramics.
Dimensions : 10.5 in W x 4.5 in H
