Description :
Best known as the author of the WWII cartoon books "Up Front", Bill Mauldin won 2 Pulitzer Prizes for his work - work for which General Patton threatened to throw him in jail... The first Pulitzer was for Mauldin's depiction of life as a solder during the war in 1945. He won his second Pulitzer in 1963 for the image in this lot which was drawn after the assassination of President Kennedy (it strangely feels relevant today for other reasons). This copy of the cartoon was given to our client's family member by Mauldin as noted in the inscription; our client used to write for the Chicago Sun-Times so we are sure he and Mauldin were friendly. We believe someone in the client's family - not Mauldin - noted who the gift was to/from as Mauldin's name is misspelled in the inscription. The cartoon measures 14.5" H x 11.5" W. There is a pale white streak down the middle of the cartoon from sun exposure over the years of display. On the off-chance you are unfamiliar with Mauldin, we are including a copy of his "Up Front" cartoon book to complete this lot. Up Front (Bill Mauldin) 1945. Henry Holt & Company, New York. 228 p.
