Description :

Downtown Shoppers captures a rainy city walkway animated by figures moving beneath umbrellas, their reflections shimmering across the wet pavement. Mayes’ expressive acrylic technique—loose strokes, softened edges, and bold color contrasts—creates a sense of motion and atmosphere. Trees and storefront suggestions frame the scene without overt detail, allowing the viewer to feel the rhythm of a busy Northwest street on a rainy day. The composition is lively, fluid, and unmistakably Mayes, blending gesture and color into a vivid urban moment.

Danny Mayes is a Pacific Northwest painter known for his expressive acrylic and watercolor depictions of Seattle neighborhoods, maritime life, Alaska landscapes, and everyday regional scenes. Born in Tacoma, Washington, he developed a distinctive style defined by gestural brushwork, strong silhouettes, and a dynamic sense of movement.

He studied at the Burnley School of Commercial Art in Seattle (later the Art Institute of Seattle) under renowned Northwest School painter William Cumming, whose influence is evident in Mayes’ confident line work and emphasis on gesture and atmosphere.

Mayes’ work has been widely exhibited throughout the region, most notably through long‑term representation at the Kirsten Gallery in Seattle, where his paintings and prints were regularly featured for decades. His art appears in numerous private and corporate collections, including those of the Seattle Seahawks, the Seattle Mariners, and collectors throughout Washington and Alaska.
