Description :

Meissen hard‑paste porcelain cup and saucer decorated in blue underglaze floral motifs with scalloped rims. Both pieces show sloppy hand-painted crossed‑swords marks on the top surfaces and undersides. The saucer underside includes two cancellation dashes, a factory practice used to void second‑quality pieces while still allowing them to be sold. The crossed‑swords emblem is Meissen’s historic factory mark, introduced in the early 18th century and used—with stylistic variations—for more than two centuries.

Era Context: The crossed‑swords mark was first adopted between 1722–1725, becoming one of the earliest and most recognizable porcelain trademarks in Europe. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Meissen continued to apply the mark by hand in underglaze cobalt, resulting in wide variation in precision. Sloppy or loosely rendered swords—like those on this set—are characteristic of this later period, when production volume increased and individual painters’ styles differed. Cancellation marks, including single or double dashes, were used by Meissen to denote pieces that did not meet first-quality standards but were still released from the factory.
