Description :

“Nightwatch Running Home” is an original acrylic by Danny Mayes, depicting a tugboat pushing through rough, wind‑driven seas under a brooding night sky. The vessel’s lights cut through the storm, illuminating spray and steel as it powers forward with determination. Mayes’ gestural brushwork and moody palette heighten the drama—dark waves, heavy clouds, and the glow of navigation lights all working together to create a tense, cinematic maritime moment. It is a strong example of his ability to capture motion, atmosphere, and the grit of working‑waterfront life.

Artist Bio — Danny Mayes (American, b. 1950s)

Danny Mayes is a Pacific Northwest painter known for his bold, intuitive brushwork and expressive depictions of regional life. Born in Tacoma, Washington, he originally trained as a boxer before earning a scholarship to the Burnley School of Commercial Art (later the Art Institute of Seattle). There he studied under renowned Northwest painter William Cumming, whose influence is evident in Mayes’ gestural linework, dynamic compositions, and emphasis on movement.

Working in acrylic, watercolor, and ink, Mayes paints street scenes, maritime subjects, Alaska and Northwest landscapes, rural settings, and character‑driven vignettes. His work has been collected by the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners, and numerous private and corporate collectors. He exhibited for many years at Kirsten Gallery in Seattle’s University District, along with other regional galleries and juried shows.
